BALLARAT City Council has backed plans to ban serial troublemakers from Ballarat pubs and nightclubs.
The move is being introduced by police and the Ballarat Liquor Accord to cut down on assaults, drunken behaviour and vandalism outside licensed premises.
Councillors at a meeting this week agreed to contribute to the process through an ongoing involvement in the accord and to offer in principle support to the declaration of a designated area in the city's central business district.
Designated areas can be introduced through changes to liquor licensing laws introduced late last year.
Last week, Ballarat Police Inspector Ian Davis said details of the plan were still be worked out but offenders could expect to receive letters banning them within the next four weeks.
The bans would vary from 24 hours to six months.
Meanwhile, the company who will install CCTV in Ballarat's central business area has been chosen.
But the decision and announcement were made in a closed council meeting.
Councillors at Wednesday's meeting heard some details about the CCTV plans in front of the public but awarded the contract to the winning tenderer for the project in secret.
Plans to install CCTV within Ballarat's late night entertainment areas were approved in October last year, with the funding coming from a national crime prevention program and from within council's capital works budget.
Stage one of the project will see the infrastructure for a CCTV system installed along Lydiard Street, between Sturt and Mair streets.
The works will begin in July and are expected to run for three months.
