A SEBASTOPOL man allegedly broke into liquor stores through their roofs and used a pole with a hook attached to steal alcohol, a court heard yesterday.

Karl Antonio, 24, is accused of committing three burglaries on liquor stores and was also allegedly involved in stealing $50,000 in furniture and household goods from a residential address. He was yesterday

denied bail in the Ballarat Magistrates Court.

Detective Senior Constable Rod Stepnell said Antonio was arrested on April 26 this year after smashing a window to gain entry to On The Rocks bottle shop in Howitt St.

Antonio allegedly stole 30 bottles of spirits worth more than $1700.

Det Sen Const Stepnell said CCTV footage showed Antonio committing another burglary in October last year entering a bottle shop through the roof to steal bottles of Johnny Walker scotch.

The court heard Antonio had also broken into PreMix King in Howitt St through the roof and used a pole to steal $350 worth of whisky.

Defence lawyer for Antonio, Ms Griffiths said her client was an alcoholic who had only stolen alcohol for personal use.

She said he was in a positive relationship and wanted to address his drinking problems.

The court heard Antonio had nine pages of prior convictions.

He faces 19 charges including burglary and theft.

Magistrate Kay Robertson said she had no confidence that Antonio would stop offending if released on bail.
